What flies do we recommend for Brunná?
Brunná is a clear early-season river in Öxarfjörður, known for sea-run Arctic char, sea-run brown trout, and large resident trout. The fishing season runs from April 1st to June 10th, and because the water is very clear and the season is early, fly choice and presentation are especially important.
Below is a simple overview of the best flies for Brunná and how to choose them throughout the spring.
Recommended Nymphs (Sizes #12–20)
These are our favorite flies for Brunná, especially in the upper river where sight fishing is common.
Pheasant Tail (#12–20)
Perdigons (#12–16)
Zebra Midge (#16–22)
Blowtorch (#12–16)
Krókurinn (#12–16)
Hares Ear (#12–18)
Baby got bead (#12 - 16)
France fly (#14 - 18)
Tip:
Early April fish often take larger, brighter nymphs (#12–14).
Recommended Streamers (Sizes #4–10)
Best for targeting large sea-run browns in the lower river.
Black Ghost (#8–4)
Rektor (#8–4)
Dýrbítur (#8–4)
Strympa (#8–4)
Wooly Bugger (#8–4)
Zonkers (#8 - 4)
When to use:
Streamers produce very well in the lower river—especially when the glacier water is clear enough to fish.
Recommended Dry Flies (Sizes #12–20)
Dry fly fishing is limited because of water temps but can still be effective.
Elk Hair Caddis (#14–12)
Parachute Adams (#16–14)
Black Gnat (#18–14)
Griffith’s Gnat (#20–16)
When to Use What (Seasonal Guidelines)
Early April – Early May
Fish are hungry after winter.
Larger nymphs with hotspots (#12–14) work very well.
Some days fish are extremely selective even early in April.
Mid-May
Rising temperatures → fish become pickier.
Smaller, natural nymphs (#16–18) often needed.
Great sight-fishing in the upper river.
Late May – June 10
Glacier river often begins colouring the lower section; can become unfishable during warm spells.
Upper river continues to fish well with small nymphs.
