What flies do we recommend for Reykjadalsá?

Reykjadalsá is a shallow, easy-wading river in North Iceland with excellent brown trout fishing from April onward and steady salmon runs from June into September. The river offers a mix of plains, moderate-flow sections, and canyon water, so a variety of flies work well depending on the season and conditions.

Below is a simple overview of the flies and sizes that consistently produce on Reykjadalsá.


Recommended Flies & Sizes

Nymphs (#12–20)

  • Pheasant Tail (hot spot and standard)

  • Perdigons (#12–16)

  • Zebra Midge (#16–20)

  • Hare’s Ear (#12–16)

  • Blow Torch (#12–16)

Dry Flies (#12–22)

Dry fly fishing often begins in early June, especially on the plains.

July – August

  • Excellent mixed trout & salmon fishing

  • Trout feed actively on dries during warm spells

  • Salmon take hitch flies, Sunray tubes, and #10–14 hook flies

September

  • Larger dry flies and nymphs, and streamers work well

  • Salmon often prefer smaller patterns (#14–16)
